Concussion is an injury to the brain resulting in a disturbance of brain function involving thinking and behavior. Concussions can be caused by a direct blow to the head or an impact to the body causing rapid movement of the head and movement of the brain within the skull. All concussions should be regarded as potentially serious. Preventing concussion begins through a concussion management plan and continued education. All team personnel are encouraged to take a concussion awareness training course prior to the start of each season. The SSA would like to remind administrators and coaches of the availability of the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP) online e-learning concussion module, “Making Headway in Soccer” available through the Coaching Association of Canada. This course is also a requirement to meet SSA coaching standards. The module is an outstanding resource for those in direct contact with athletes to build awareness of the causes and symptoms of head injuries as well as the proper care and return to play protocol in the event of concussion.
The SSA has an established Concussion Management policy (9-Section 13, Risk Management), including Return to Play Protocol. Return to Play would be managed on an individual basis with communication between the athlete, team staff, parents/guardians, and health care providers.
